This week’s material was quite entertaining. It discussed the effects of mind altering substances such as LSD. It opened my eyes and pushed me into furthering my research in LSD art. Before taking this class, I was unaware this was even a thing. This art the product of inspiration due to psychedelic drugs. This first became common back in 1960s. An Artist by the name of Henri Michaux was considered a starter for psychedelic art. Another interesting fact is that some of the art work shared similar influences as if those that were schizophrenics. Oscar Janiger, created the expression “dry schizophrenia” for those that can “control their surroundings and yet be crazy at the same time”.
LSD psychotherapy in the 1980s became another common practice. It is a pretty self-explanatory process. It involves patients painting while on LSD.
One Artist used LSD to draw herself over the nine hours and how it affected her brain. This was done during an experiment by the US government in 1950s. Below is 15 minutes after taking the drug and nine hours after the drugs.

Wow! I did not know that LSD psychotherapy was a real concept until now. I find that fascinating because I am a huge supporter in the idea that humans have the right to use drugs to change their brain to their advantage. Thank you for sharing how LSD could help people paint.
ReplyDeleteJust like yourself, I was not aware that LSD art was an actual thing. I always just assumed that LSD was something that was bad and never as something that could provide an artistic advantage. I beleive that becasue there is a negative association with the drug in society today, we will never fully acccept it for the artistic benefits that it brings. As long as people are using it recreationally and not for its healing and artistic benefits, then it will continue to be criminalized.
ReplyDeleteHi Blayne,
ReplyDeleteI, too, was unaware that scientists, psychiatrists, and even artists, to name a few, have been drawn to studying LSD to look at the possible therapeutic effects it has on drawing and painting. It is pretty interesting to see how a substance like LSD can alter the mind to spark creativity in people, but being that it is a very strong hallucinogenic drug, it is quite frightening that it can also make users see and hear things that are not real! Overall, thanks for sharing!
